The Zergling (commonly known as "lings") is the basic light ground assault unit for the Zerg. It attacks with its claws and can be devastating in large numbers. Zerglings are trained in pairs at a cost of 50 minerals and 1 Control, making each Zergling cost 25 minerals and 0.5 Control.
In the later stages of the game, the Zergling's movement and attack speeds can be upgraded to increase its effectiveness. Fully upgraded Zerglings move and attack so quickly that they have been nicknamed "Cracklings".
Lore
The small, savage dune-runners of the sand-world Zz’gash were incorporated into the Zerg Swarm to serve as scouts and initial assault troops. Although the Zerglings are little more than feral animals, they work well in large groups under the command of larger Zerg warriors. The voracious Zerglings are fond of ripping enemies to shreds with their razor-limb sickles and fangs. Because the genetic code of the Zergling is so simple to replicate, a single Larva can spawn two separate Zerglings.

StarCraft 2
The Zergling's StarCraft 2 model
The Zergling has returned as the Zerg's most basic warrior in StarCraft 2. While it is mostly unchanged (visually it has had wings added), it has received a new ability to mutate into a Baneling, a deadly explosive unit that can cause major area of effect damage.
