Tech TreesFrom SC2PodTech Trees are an important part of StarCraft gameplay. Each of the 3 races possess a variety of units and buildings, and as the game progresses, more advanced ones are enabled. A player is always faced with a choice between producing more low level units, or opting to quickly reach a higher technological level and unlocking stronger units. A player choosing to focus on basic units can often catch a teching opponent unprepaired for a fight, but if he cannot eliminate him quickly, he may lose in the long run. There are 3 technological tiers, or levels of advancement, and each one is usually achieved through the construction of a particular building. While all 3 races have distinct play styles, all 3 generally adhere to this rule, with the Zerg upgrading their Hatchery to advance in tiers, and the Terran and Protoss building particular structures to advance. Buildings that are not required in order to advance in tiers can be skipped entirely if a player cares only to reach a higher level. In professional StarCraft matches, many "timing attacks" are performed. These are calculated assaults that take advantage of subtle differences in the races' tech speeds. A player will attempt to attack at a point in time when he or she knows that the opponent has not yet been able to reach a new technology that would stop the attack. Therefore, knowing the proper layout of all 3 tech trees, as well as the cost and build time of the crucial tier-unlocking buildings is a must for professional players.
