The Sentry is a hovering ground unit with a weak attack but powerful abilities.
In Starcraft: Brood War the Hallucination ability wasn't very useful but Blizzard has improved it in Starcraft 2. The energy cost has been reduced, the amount of fake units created has been increased, and more. The "fakes" don't do any damage to the enemy units but are useful to scare away your enemy, since the sight of a large force of protoss is very intimidating.

History
The Sentry used to be called the Disruptor, and before that the Nullifier. Many people, including some at Blizzard, still accidentally called it the Nullifier, even up to the point it changed to Sentry. The Nullifier used to have an ability which would make caster units unable to use their abilities. This only applied to spells which required energy, not cooldown-only skills such as D-8 Charges, Blink, or Charge.
