After a lots of speculations about the StarCraft II release date, finally someone from Blizzard has talked about it. On the pre-E3 Activision Blizzard conference held in the weekend,
Mike Morhaime - president of Blizzard Entertainment - said:
"Mike Morhaime" wrote:We're targeting an end of year release --this year-- for StarCraft II. But as always, we won't release it until it meets our standards and the expectations of our players.
According to GameSpot's coverage of the event, the
beta is coming out
later this summer. Also, Mike Morhaime said that more about their games will be revealed at Blizzcon, and he showed a cinematic cutscene video from the StarCraft II's single-player campaign, that hopefully we will see later.

I doubt then i am guessing late August considering they did say late summer not middle of summer.

They actually said "later this summer", which is quite different from "late this summer". The former only means 'some time between now and the end of summer', the latter would indeed mean late in the summer.

Nice to hear Blizzard is targeting winter. Still i dont doubt they will move the release date several months.
Expecting an inovating beta for mid june. (patchable and with lots of nice features)
