We've known for a while that most of the old (if not all) StarCraft:BW units will be available in the map editor. In an interview with Dustin Browder, Chris Sigaty and Bob Colayco by Giantbomb.com they reveal that those units will actually be used in the Single Player Campaign as well, as purchasable units for Raynor.
Blizzard wrote:Since you talk about there being so many choices on the tech side in the campaign, are there any differences between the units and the tech in the campaign, and what you're going to see in the multiplayer? Is there single-player-specific stuff?
Dustin: So we're looking at having a lot of units, especially for Raynor as a mercenary, he's getting access to and buying technologies that are appropriate for the kind of down-and-out mercenary scumbag like he is. So he'll have access to things like Goliaths and Wraiths and Vultures, and all these old weapons that are not part of modern Dominion forces like we see in the multiplayer. Maybe some prototype stuff that would simply be way too powerful for any kind of multiplayer experience, but he can steal it and make use of it. So you'll definitely see not only new units, but lots and lots and lots of upgrades that simply would not be appropriate for multiplayer.
Way too powerful prototype weapons? Sign me up. It seems like they are adding all kinds of role playing elements to single player: Buy exotic units, do missions for weapon loot, gather cash, upgrade existing units with insane powerups etc.
Just looking at a game like Call of Duty 4 it's easy to see how much those role playing elements add to a game that's not your typical RPG. Hoarding loot and gaining XP must appeal to something very fundamental in our minds

my thoughts, you can agree or disagree
1. its supposed to be an rts. it is on SP skirmish and bnet.
2. its going to be a hell of a game but
3. doesn't it almost feel like the SP campaign is a little RPGish?
4. a question. since the terrans as Raynor will get BW stuff, does that mean the protoss and zerg will to a degree?
5. another question for all.
do you like or dislike the trilogy idea presented to us by blizz?
i do

Well they want to make the story really epic and continue to make the characters even bigger and want them to evolve(sounds wrong, it probably is, so pardon my english).
My first thought when they started revealing some ideas about the SP maps, was that the SP had been too much influenced by other RTS'es like C&C. But it's hard to say without actually having seen a full SP map and I do think that most maps will be like any other RTS scenario and that the "optional maps" and maybe one or two normal maps in the SP will be having RPG'like scenario.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to say, but atm I just feel so damn tired I can't really express my thoughts. At least that's what it feels like xD

Yeah that's a good question. I'm hoping that you just buy the technology, and are able to then produce unlimited Vultures etc from the factory (or maybe a cap per map). Would suck having to cuddle and take care of a bunch of bought units that you don't want to loose. Wouldn't be fun sending them into battle, just as you had to cuddle the precious hero units in StarCraft.

couple of things i'm finding really interesting..
xel naga is going to be part of this new bit of story - if we're going to be able to play units unique to particular missions, does this mean we might come face to face with a xel naga npc? we've been told we're only getting the 3 playable races, but nothing specifically ruling out non-playable units..
also, it would be so easy to integrate older protoss and zerg units into their respective campaigns further down the track.. the protoss would honour these past disciplines even after vast technological advances, it makes sense they would find reasons to deploy them back into the field when needed. with zerg, perhaps we'll see units introduced gradually throughout the campaign as kerrigan evolves her swarm?
