A firewall isn't the same as anti-virus. A firewall can be either software (a program running on your computer like Windows Firewall) or hardware (a device that connects to your computer and to your Internet modem; this doubles as a router) and tries to protect your computer from unauthorized access from the Internet and, especially in software firewalls, tries to make sure nothing on your computer that's not supposed to can access the Internet.
Once again Tiger, you save the day. I was trying to keep it simple for the young lad. I guess we can call it "authorization protector", but thank you for the much more educated version of the definition of firewall.
